TUESDAY, MAY 5
I thought that spending this week in San Francisco would involve sitting
around, catching up on old mail and magazines, eating well, enjoying the
kids. The last two expectations have been accurate. M & J are more
wonderful than ever. The food in San Francisco is still supreme. Breakfast
today at a local place on Clement: eggs, toast, pancakes, bacon or sausage
for $2.45. All were perfect. Then the rest of the day: errands, shopping,
buying humungous quantities of wine, beer, soda, paper goods, snacks--enough
to fill the humungous van I rented, so that we'll have to take a trip out
to Napa tomorrow just to make a preliminary delivery. Jonathan and I tasted
two red wines in the parking lot of Trader Joe's to see which one to buy
in quantity. The St. Supery Cabernet Souvignon beat out the Parducci Zinfandel.
Dinner at The Slanted Door--the best Southeast Asian food going. We compared
Napa Valley Champagne to Domaine Chandon. We were too drunk to decide.
